Step Guide To Stonewashing Your Jeans

The 80s totally ruled, as did Def Leppard and their fashion sense. Designing your own unique, personalized stonewashed jeans is a total breeze. Some friends of mine recently asked where I get my super authentic 80s style Def Leppard look. And while some would have you believe the Def Leppard look starts with ripped jeans, those of us truly in the know, know it is almost impossible to properly stonewash a pair of pre-ripped jeans, so we never rip them before stonewashing them! And you know, just buying stonewashed jeans from Macy’s is for the feeble willed. A true Def Leppard fan and connoisseur of the most rocking decade ever, the 1980s, should be able to wash his or her own stonewashed jeans. Don’t you agree? Or are you still holding on relentlessly to your Fedora from the beat generation days?

Stonewashing jeans is probably simpler than you previously thought. To begin, just take any pair of boring old jeans and soak them in salt water for 2 days. I prefer salt water from the Dead Sea, as it contains the highest concentrate of sodium nitrates of any salt water on Earth, but I also take frequent trips to the Middle East so this is no problem for me.

You will probably have to settle for some run of the mill Atlantic of Pacific Ocean salt water. Its ok, it will do just fine. Most importantly, you won’t use salt water from the Gulf of Mexico, unless you plan on using your new stonewashed jeans as a political statement against the horrifying effects of the BP debacle going on down there. But alas if you have news outlets at your disposal to pull something like this off, you are probably too rich to be stonewashing your own jeans. So go get them at Macy’s punk!

If you aren’t rich, then you should read on! Step 2 is to wring those suckers out. Give them a real thorough wind up, twist and release. Yeah, that’s right, don’t be shy. Now, get some sand paper and rub it up and down your jeans length wise to create the desired stonewashed look. You can experiment with different grit sand paper to adjust the effect and outcome.

Now we are ready for the simplest part, step 3! Hang your new stonewashed jeans in the sun and let them drink in that vitamin D. After they have spent ample time drying, it is time to go ahead and wash and dry them normally. If you are going for the full blown Def Leppard look, I would recommend making cuts in your jeans prior to the first washing. This way the cuts will fray in the wash and thusly look all the more authentic for your next 80s revival show.

And finally step 4, let’s go ahead and wash and dry those awesome new jeans normally. I recommend using any type of generic detergent because I am cheap, but you can waste money on a brand name detergent if you like. As for dryer softeners, I don’t use them after contracting a horrifying rash in 1996 from their use. But if you like living on the edge, follow your heart. Either way, your new stonewashed jeans are going to be the talk of the town. Have fun, and don’t forget the hairspray!

Vintage Clothing Never Goes Out Of Style – Timeless Outfits For Anybody In Any Era

With trends in and out of fashion faster than they are placed on the racks, the fine line between ‘hot’ and vintage has been blurred. Any style from a previous era is considered as vintage clothing – which happens to inspire many of the up and coming trends. Many individual pieces of clothing are of vintage style or vintage inspiration but not what we’d call a true collectible. For an item to be considered as truly vintage, it must have hailed from an earlier age and survived the wear and tear of time. Vintage clothing is a collective term for second-hand itemized pieces that originated from the 1920s up to the 1990s. Sometimes synonymous to -vintage-, -retro- clothing are garments procured from the 60s and the 70s specifically. Anything before the 1920s is considered as an antique, meant to be preserved, even showcased. Anything after the 1990s on the other hand, which has been out of -vintage- reach, is still hideous.

A cycle of fashion trends is one determinant where certain styles are considered as outdated or vintage-chic. It used to have been a rotation of 50 years, cut down to 30, 20 and now, even 10. Turnovers from era to era are gaining speed and fast. Vintage clothing used to be limited to the 1970s and its preceding years, but now the 80s and the 90s are already making their comebacks. With huge tees and jumpers reemerging from the grunge era, and shoulder pads and bare midriffs from the disco age, the 21st century should be ready for a turnover soon. But vintage pieces are those that transcend current trends. Made from fashion designers representative of a particular era, they have transformed from second-hand garments into timeless collectibles.

There has been a recent surge in the vintage market with items being referred to as hard assets. In layman’s terms, the prices of these items are on the rise. With a new niche, mostly fashion forward women who can afford, the value of vintage clothing is quickly gaining reputable recognition. From readily accessible in thrift shops, second-hand gems like Dior, Versace and the like, now cost an arm and a leg in special shops mostly found online. Run by middlemen who take the liberty of hand-picking and restoring vintage items, these online shops cater to specific target markets. For example, a shop dedicated to mod and retro will only feature designer pieces from the 60s and the 70s. It is through this system that -vintage- will never be outdated.

Chocolate Gold And Pearl Jewelry Trends

Hailing from the country who knows fashion like no one’s business, Italian-inspired chocolate gold jewelry is reaching the shores of the U.S. and making real waves. This evolution is a new gold alloy in a warm brown shade. The cutting-edge, breathtaking color creates a deeper dimension to skin tones of all types, as well as today’s current fashions. The discerning jewelry lover who is seeking something truly unique will fall in love with the look of chocolate gold – a great twist on a timeless classic.

In fact, chocolate gold is so popular right now it’s the new black in jewelry design. Designers are creating some spectacular treats that look good enough to eat. Whether you prefer gold, pearls or gemstones, this irresistible color is one of the season’s hottest trends.

Chocolate gold, specifically, is created in a special process called PVD (physical vaporization and deposition). A designer begins with rose gold and applies the PVD treatment to produce the chocolate gold. While some pieces can range as much as $10,000 and beyond, there are also jewelry pieces that create the same look with 14K chocolate brown gold coating.

Chocolate diamonds are enjoying some well-deserved recognition recently on the red carpets. Celebrities such as Fergie, Halle Berry and Terri Hatcher have been seen wearing the gem that was once an object of disdain. Known as brown diamonds, these gems were once considered low grade. These naturally-occurring diamonds pair beautifully with white diamonds, chocolate pearls, turquoise and other colored gem stones. Chocolate diamonds possess the same properties and durability as white diamonds. The only difference is their color.

For several years chocolate pearls have been riding a popularity wave reserved only for those who could afford their pricey status. Recently, these beauties are being made available with the mainstream crowd at more affordable prices. These tiny delights are actually Tahitian and freshwater pearls that have undergone a proprietary, pigment-altering heating process, or organic dyeing process that transforms them into that delicious chocolate hue. Imitation pearls are created through a dyeing process with silver nitrate.

Like chocolate gold, chocolate pearls are favored by those with a fashion-forward sense when it comes to jewelry. Not to be confused with grandmother’s classic string of pearls, chocolate pearls have an unpredictable flair that goes well with today’s fashions. And fortunately, it’s a hue that wears well on nearly anyone. Worn against all the brown fashions available these days, brown pearls creates a tonal quality against camel, adds soft contrast to creamy white and gives the all-black urban style a new dimension. For the bride, chocolate pearls add a burnished dimension to wedding whites and creams.

The idea of chocolate and jewelry are certainly not new concepts. What woman doesn’t love a beautiful piece of jewelry accompanied by rich, dark cocoa treats? One Italian jewelry designer was inspired by these two elements in her recent collection. It didn’t hurt that the town she lives and works in is also known for its superb chocolate. In fact, the city’s first chocolate candy factory was founded in the 1800s. Using that as inspiration, the designer applied the PVD process and added elements of rose gold to her jewelry designs.

Wearable Chocolate Jewelry

Perhaps not surprisingly, this love for chocolate and jewelry has inspired a few notable European chocolatiers to create cocoa jewelry that is both wearable and edible. For example, a Belgium chocolatier has for several decades been creating chocolate diamonds, surely inspired by the city of Antwerp, Belgium, the historic center of diamond trading. The diamond-shaped confections come in milk, dark, white and marbled chocolate.

Combining chocolate and sugar paste, an English chocolatier creates edible, wearable necklaces and earrings. Meanwhile, in Switzerland two confectioners design chocolate, jewel-covered treats. Their collection includes pieces that are covered with edible foil in silver or gold, as well as edible diamonds or gemstones.

Caring For Your Hand Stamped Jewelry

After purchasing your new hand stamped jewelry in silver or gold, you will want to keep it looking as beautiful as the day you purchase it. Here are a few tips and tricks.

Silver oxidizes naturally when exposed to the air, therefore keep your silver hand stamped jewelry in an air-tight container when not in use. You can purchase mini oxidization retardation paper that you place in your jewelry box; it will help neutralize any oxidization that would occur. Be sure to keep a fresh piece of paper in your jewelry box, and change when you notice oxidization occurring. Gold-filled can be treated just like gold; it does not oxidize, or oxidizes very minimally.

When getting dressed, put on your hand stamped jewelry after you are done with hair and make-up. The chemicals and ingredients in most hair, make-up, perfumes and colognes can build up on your silver and gold jewelry and cause it to look dull and dirty. So be sure your jewelry is the last item you put on before you head out the door.

After taking off your hand stamped jewelry, be sure to wipe with a cotton cloth to remove body oils, residues and sweat. These can build up over time and cause the finish to become dull and lackluster.

Be careful not to scratch, ding or dent your hand stamped jewelry. Silver and gold are fairly soft materials and mar easily. Use caution when performing physically exhaustive activities such as heavy housework, working in the garage, participating in sports or any activity with sudden movements.

It is also best to keep your hand stamped jewelry out of water, sunlight and extreme weather elements. Both hard and soft tap water contain chemicals and minerals that can build up on jewelry over time. After exposing your jewelry to water, be sure to clean and polish with a pre-treated polishing cloth to remove any residue.

Every few weeks or so, clean all your hand stamped jewelry with a pre-treated polishing cloth, or a mild silver polish. This will keep tarnish at bay and retain the wonderful luster and shine as the day you bought it!
